Susan Carruthers serves as Graduate Director in History. An Associate Professor in the field of The United States and the World, she specializes in international/cultural history, with particular interests in representations of war and imperialism. She is the author of two books, Winning Hearts and Minds (1995) and The Media at War (2000), and of several articles in journals including American Quarterly, Cinéaste, Millennium, and Diplomatic History.

Currently a fellow at the Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History at Harvard University, she is completing a book manuscript entitled Cold War Captives. Her next project, growing out of her recent writings on representations of Iraq, will explore cultural constructions of US occupations.

In the History graduate program, Susan Carruthers teaches courses on aspects of US Foreign Relations; imperialism; media and war; and in the Division of Global Affairs she offers a class on the Evolution of the Global System.
