Ian Watson is the Chair of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts as well as the Coordinator of the Theatre Program. He is the author of Towards a Third Theatre: Eugenio Barba and the Odin Teatret (Routledge, 1993, 1995) and Negotiating Cultures: Eugenio Barba and the Intercultural Debate (Manchester University Press, 2002).  He edited Performer Training Across Cultures (Harwood/Routledge, 2001), and has also published numerous articles on theatre in journals including The Drama Review, New Theatre Quarterly, The Latin American Theatre Review,  Asian Theatre Journal,  Latin American Theatre Review, and Gestos.  He is an Advisory Editor for New Theatre Quarterly.

His current research spans several areas. One concerns the role of performance in politics, another the place of legacy in performer training,
and a third, the development of interdisciplinary arts curricula that marries service to community to real world experience and civic engagement.
He teaches courses in performance studies, performance and media, directing, theatre history and scene study.
